These straps conveniently allow you to cinch down the bag to secure the contents inside. Osprey designed the Daylite with two external compression straps. It really depends on how you wear your pack. I like the sleek look of this design, but some might consider it an annoyance against their back. Instead of attaching a loop at the top of the backpack, Osprey built the handle into the straps. However, it is not the traditional design that you’ll find on most backpacks. Secondly, there is an easy grab handle at the top of the pack. I’ve used my safety whistle to scare off a couple of curious California black bears in the past, so some would say that this feature is, in fact, a lifesaver. The whistle is small so as to not cause any discomfort, but it’s a good accessory to have. The Osprey Daylite has a built-in safety whistle on its chest strap. I’ll never forget my early hiking days when I once stopped for a lunch break only to find my snacks floating around inside my pack. Yes, the water will drain onto your lower back, but if you ask me, that’s better than it soaking the entire contents of your bag. This allows water to drain out if your hydration bladder leaks for any reason. One of the most ingenious features of the Daylite is the small hole at the bottom of the hydration sleeve. You won’t even notice that the pocket is there when you choose to use the pack without a hydration bladder. I am a big fan of this design, as it allows for maximum storage space, which is a necessity in small day packs. The hydration sleeve on this pack is located right behind the main pocket, closest to your back when wearing the pack. The strap does not transfer any of the pack’s weight or increase comfort when carrying. You should remember that the hip strap is solely designed for security, not support. This is extremely helpful when snowboarding, mountain biking, or rock climbing, as it prevents the pack from throwing you off balance at every turn. In addition, there is an adjustable chest strap that can be removed when not in use.Īdditionally, the pack is designed with a thin hip strap to keep the pack in place.

The straps are padded and slightly curved in order to improve comfort when carrying the Daylite at full capacity. Within the foam are various slits which allow airflow and increase breathability. The back panel of this pack is equipped with a thick foam pad. If the material gets punctured, the diamond ripstop design will prevent the fabric from tearing. This basically means that it is a water-resistant material that is both flexible and lightweight. The Daylite is primarily made from a material called 210D double diamond ripstop and accented with 400HD nylon packcloth. The Osprey Daylite’s dimensions are 18 in x 9.5 in x 8.5 in. The removable hip belt is made of thin webbing and is fine for the normal capacity of this pack but on longer hikes with a heavier load, a bit of cushioning would be good. The Daylite is extremely lightweight and weighs exactly 1 lb. There is also a sternum strap, adjustable on a slider, that comes with its own built in whistle. The shoulder straps are mesh covered foam at the top and double layer fabric lower down. Smaller frames will appreciate the padded link between the two shoulder straps at the top of the back which stops those straps slipping down but wider built folk might find this a bit restricting. This is a unisex pack but the shoulder straps are fairly adjustable and the back long for a pack of this capacity so whilst I’ve found it very comfortable at 5’2″, Paul at 6′ has also worn it without any issues. There are no fixing loops for poles or ice axe although foldable poles can be stowed in the side pockets and held in place with the compression straps. On the outside there are two mesh side pockets which can take a litre bottle each although accessing them while wearing is a little awkward.

The main compartment can be made smaller using the two compression straps on either side. The zips are robust with plastic pull loops large enough to use with gloves. At the front there’s a zippered pocket perfect for sunglasses, snacks etc but not big enough to take an OS map – there are two mesh pouches within the pocket, useful for storing phone/compass and there’s also a clip to keep keys safe. There’s a sleeve at the back of this section that can take a tablet or small laptop and an externally accessed pouch for up to a 2l hydration bladder with a neat clip strap to keep the bladder in place. I’ve been using this one on a variety of day walks and found the single main compartment can easily hold a lighterweight set of waterproofs, first aid kit, insulated top, and food. Osprey have updated their daylite pack with some added features, new colour options and a kids version.
